Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Special Programs for Pregnant and Postpartum Members
There is no one right way to quit using tobacco or nicotine products. Some people can stop completely and use other activities to help them handle their cravings. However, some people find the cravings difficult to deal with and ask their doctor for help.
Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can help address cravings and help you stay away from tobacco. NRT can be ordered by any doctor, including your primary care physician, certified nurse practitioner, or psychiatrist.
To help curb cravings, NRT delivers a small dose of nicotine without the other harmful chemicals in tobacco. NRT can deliver nicotine in several ways, including gum, sprays, inhalers, lozenges, and patches. These products may not take all of the cravings away, but they can help reduce them.
Some people who use NRT have side effects, such as nausea, headache, heartburn, and hiccups. NRT should be used for a limited time, and most people gradually reduce their dose before quitting.
Many people are able to quit without using NRT, but for some people, it may take a few tries. There are also medications in pill form that help stop tobacco use. You can talk to your doctor about these options.
NRT and pregnancy
It is not clear if NRT is safe to use if you are pregnant. The safest options are behavioral and support methods. Talk to your doctor about making a quit plan that is right for you.1
NRT and teens
The Food and Drug Administration has not approved NRT for teenagers and adolescents younger than 18. But, the American Academy of Pediatrics says that NRT is safer than using tobacco products. Talk with your doctor about safe ways to quit tobacco use. Your doctor can write you a prescription if they think NRT is a good option for you.1
